CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Khed was picking out some tools in the cargo bay when he heard his brother's voice in his head.

Good news! We're taking on another passenger for this next trip, and it looks like he can pay top rates, just like Lanati!

What aren't you telling me, Jetay? Khed retorted. What kind of trouble is this new passenger bringing?

There was a moment of silence that Khed took for hesitation, and then Jetay said: Not local police by the look of them. I think they might be the ones who sicced the police on Lanati, back on Dahar.

Did she tell you that?

She's not in a mood to talk. Khed caught a tinge of sadness from Jetay's mind, sadness and guilt.

Now what did you do, Jetay?

I had to do the sword thing, right in front of her and the others. I made both a sword and a shield.

The shock made Khed fumble his soldering tool, and it tumbled to the deck.

"What in all the worlds possessed you to do a thing like that?" Khed spoke out loud to the empty corridor and then felt like a complete fool. He picked up the tool, took a deep breath, and tried to transmit his thoughts again.

It was an emergency, Jetay told him. Look, I don't have time to explain now. There are people who are willing to help us get back to the ship and get off-world in a hurry.

Khed edged cautiously towards the open ramp. He peered around a storage container, craning his head to see if there was anyone there. He didn't know what he was expecting to find, but he could tell that Jetay had kicked open another nest of trouble, and some of that trouble might be headed towards the ship.

What are these new friends of yours getting out of it? Khed demanded. And don't tell me they're helping us leave Ouatur from the goodness of their hearts, because that's definitely not it.

They don't like Lanati's enemies hanging around here, Jetay explained. They think Lanati's enemies will just go chasing after us and leave the planet alone.

So the Loyalists can blow us up in interplanetary space. That's just great.

I'm not worried about them. You should have more faith in my flying.

The confidence in Jetay's thoughts startled Khed. It wasn't that Jetay was never like this, but during their time on the run, these sparks of swagger had come more and more rarely.

I guess I'd better fire up the engines, Khed told Jetay.

You may not have time, came the reply. Our contacts think Lanati's enemies are sending drones to secure the Vanner.

Just then, a black, cylindrical shape hovered into view, headed up the open ramp. Two horizontal vanes jutted from its midsection, probably for the antigravity units. Three more shapes just like it appeared, following the leader in a diamond formation.

Gotta go, Khed told Jetay. They're here.

He broke the connection with his brother, and reached out with his mind towards the drone, trying to analyze it. With his mind's eye, he saw only a blank space.
